State attorneys general have a very big job, the responsibilities of which are hard to pin down because they are so vast. In the broadest sense, attorneys general are in charge of the department of law in their states. Most states popularly elect attorneys general except for Alaska, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, New Jersey, Tennessee and Wyoming, as well as the District of Columbia.
With such powers as the ability to institute civil suits and the authority to challenge legislative or authoritative actions, an attorney general serves as a connection between the law and public interest. Consequently, he or she is an invaluable source for consumers, those with credit problems in particular.
If you feel that are being treated incorrectly in your debt situation, if you are dealing with an unfair company, if you would like more information on laws or potential courses of action, or if you just have no where else to turn, your state attorney general is a great person to turn to for guidance. He or she can provide you with legal advice or necessary paperwork, or can help you to find representation in your area.
